Protection from God
Getting Through the Tough Times:
My personal journey through the pandemic
Devotional #3—Protection
Good morning Fit.Church!
Over the last couple of days we talked about how a little comfort during tough times can be helpful, how God’s Word can help us grow, and then yesterday we shared how laughter can be like medicine to us.
Today we are going to examine Psalm 91. This passage will feed our faith and bolster our courage.
Let me read it to you.
Psalm 91
1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.
3 For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.
4 He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day.
6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
7 Though a thousand fall at your side,
though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you.
8 Just open your eyes,
and see how the wicked are punished.
9 If you make the Lord your refuge,
if you make the Most High your shelter,
10 no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your home.
11 For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
12 They will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
13 You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!
14 The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
16 I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”
Here are two thoughts from this Psalm that we will emphasize today. Two thoughts that will encourage us and uplift us during our current pandemic!
1. We will experience protection.
From v. 4, “He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.”
I have always thought that the writer of this psalm was comparing God’s care to a hen watching over her chicks.
But in looking at some further studies, I came across some Hebrew scholars who think that the writer of this psalm is referring to the Seraphim. I remember that the Seraphim rests on the Ark of the Covenant which set in the center of the Holy of Holies.
What is awesome for us is that we can enter that holiest of places because we have been given access because of Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. We can come boldly to God asking for his help and provision.
2. We will experience power.
From v. 13, “You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!”
Both of these are used in scripture to symbolize evil and even Satan. What we are reading about here is an awesome God. The Almighty can rescue us not only from earthly threats, but the danger of our own sin, and even the spiritual threats of our greatest enemy, the evil one.
You see, through Psalm 91, I’ve come to realize that our God is far more powerful than germs, the Covid 19 virus, our days of isolation, and our job struggles to stay employed.
Triple D: Take a few moments and ask God to encourage you and to make these two truths from Psalm 91 a reality for you and your walk with God.
