Christ, The Light in Darkness
The Darkness Lifted
John 9:1-7
As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. 2 “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”
3 “It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him. 4 We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work. 5 But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”
6 Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes. 7 He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!
Jesus lifts the darkness. In many ways, Christmas is the lifting of darkness on humanity. He lifts the darkness individually and corporately.
John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.
Jesus burst forth on to the earthly plane and offered life to all of creation. His life brought light to everyone and he changed our existence. We experience only part of his reign in this present age. We do not experience its’ completeness.
Why? Because we live in a fallen world we are unable to experience the fullness of Jesus’ reign.
I personally feel that during my lifetime there has never been a period of greater darkness in our nation than exist today under the threat of the Covid 19 pandemic. The darkness of depression, loneliness, despair, and death have definitely been a part of many lives.
This is why our daily time with God is so essential today. We need the light of Christ to shine forth especially through tough times of which this is one of the toughest.
Many of us feel much like this blind man. We feel inferior, broken and even handicapped. We may look fine on the outside but inside…we are a mess. For me my mess fuels my desire for food and food is what calms our anxiety and the cycle goes on and on and on. And this negative cycle in my life and in the lives of so many is unhealthy, unproductive, and detrimental not only to my physical health but also to my spiritual and emotional well-being.
Triple D: How does your time with God look each day? How could you better establish this time so as to allow the light of Christ to drive out the darkness both within and around you?
